Decorating your Christmas Tree

Decorating your Tree is always heaps of fun. Once I’ve chosen my theme and selected the palette of colours to give the tree it’s base, I love reminiscing over the treasured keepsakes & decorations we have collected over the years.  When decorating your tree it’s best to have a framework which is determined by the palette of colour you have chosen. I usually suggest  a base of two tones and then a scattering of speciality decorations.  View my instructional video on Decorating your Christmas Tree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riA1LKhRAW4

how many decorations

The number of decorations depends on a number of factors.   Are you decorating the entire tree or just 2/3rds because you’ve positioned it up against a wall or in a corner?  If that’s the case then you won’t need to decorate the entire tree just what is visible.  The style and size of the tree also determine the quantity of decorations, particularly if you have a slim tree like the Pencil Pine or the Vienna Spruce.

Step 1

By starting with larger decorations like Poinsettias, ribbons or large baubles you can create the basic structure of the tree. I usually use 15cm diameter balls for the bottom half of the tree and 12cm balls for the top half.  Spread the decorations in a diamond pattern through the tree.  These base decorations should be pushed into the foliage of the tree (ie. they sit deep in the foliage rather than hanging on an outer branch) which helps give the tree a little more depth.

To create the wow factor continue positioning your next colour in alternate diamond patterns.  You could use floral picks or a second colour bauble to create a second focal point and create a lovely symmetry to draw all of your pieces together.

Many people haven’t heard of picks but these are the sprays of flowers, branches and leaves that we add to our Christmas trees and table top displays to create real “wow” factor. To put it simply, they are decorations on sticks! And the even better news is that picks are not limited to flowers, but there’s loads of fabulously fun novelty sprays as well.

Picks can be used to create a tree topper, add dimension to your tree, to create a strong repeat decorating pattern in your tree, or use them in your wreaths, garlands and table top displays to create stunning displays.

Step 3

Choose another repeating decoration in a slightly smaller size and diamond them throughout the tree.  For example, a 10cm size bauble scattered throughout your tree in one of your two main colours.  This completes the base or foundation of the tree.  The tree has a strong colour (or a couple of colours) to draw together the overall look.

Step 4

Now it’s time to introduce the gorgeous collectibles and sentimental decorations you have collected over the years.  Spread these throughout the tree.  The repeat decorations used in the foundation of the tree resulting in a far more uniform look and creates the more stylish finish you like, but still incorporates the many sentimental decorations you have collected over the years.
